Service level objective
A target value, or a range of values, for a service level over a stated window, measured by a service level indicator. One shape is a lower bound on a success proportion, such as 99.9 percent of valid requests. Another is a bound on a duration. It is not the agreement that may promise the target, and not the measurement that shows whether the target was hit. An objective can exist with no service level agreement. If nothing has been agreed to happen when the target is missed, the target is an objective. ITIL's service level is a metric of expected or achieved quality and does not split the target from the measurement; this concept is only the target. The unreliability a success-proportion target still allows is the error budget.

Properties
What we can say about Service level objective
These properties describe meanings and reference targets. Storage types, required fields, and cardinality belong to the consuming data model.
| Property | Meaning | Values and units |
|---|---|---|
| Service level objective agreement | A service level agreement that commits to this objective, when a customer is promised it. An internal objective can leave this empty. | Values reference Service level agreement |
| Service level objective indicator | The service level indicator this objective sets a target against. The indicator is the measurement; the objective is the target. | Values reference Service level indicator |
| Service level objective target | The target value over the objective's window, in the units of its indicator. A success proportion is a fraction of one: 99.9 percent is 0.999, not 99.9. A duration target is a duration. It is not the measured value. The service level indicator defines that measurement. | Scalar meaning |
