Error budget

The unreliability a success-proportion service level objective allows in its window: one minus the target. A 99.9 percent objective allows 0.1 percent. Applied to the valid events in the window, that proportion is a count of allowed bad events, which is the same allowance in the indicator's units. This measure is the allowance, not the amount still unused after failures have consumed some of it. It applies when the objective is a success proportion, the form the SRE workbook uses for an error budget. A target that is not a proportion, such as an average latency under a stated duration, is not turned into a budget by subtracting it from one. The budget is not a second objective and not availability.

Measure

How it is computed

FormulaOne minus the objective's success-proportion target, with that target as a fraction of one. The count of bad events allowed in the window is that proportion times the valid events in the window. Recomputed for the window.
