Change failure rate

The proportion of production deployments, including releases to users that the team counts as deployments, that degrade the service and need remediation such as a hotfix, a rollback, or a fix forward. A bug found before production is outside the rate. So is an incident that a deployment did not cause, and a pipeline run that never reached production. DORA's later deployment rework rate, the proportion of deployments that are unplanned work to fix defects, is not this rate. This is one of DORA's software delivery metrics. It is not deployment frequency, which is a count of deployments that reached production, per unit of time.

Measure

How it is computed

FormulaThe number of production deployments in the window that degrade the service and require remediation, divided by the number of production deployments in that window. A deployment that never reaches production is in neither count. Recomputed for the window.
