Environment
A subset of infrastructure used for a particular purpose, where a build runs. The usual kinds are development, test, staging, and production. Development is where the software is changed. Test is where it is checked. Staging is a production-like place used to rehearse a release. Production is where the service's users are. Organizations use other names and other counts, so those four kinds are not a closed list. An environment is not a deployment into it and not a release. Software that runs in development is not, by that fact, running in production. The word can also mean external conditions. This concept is the infrastructure used for a purpose.

What we can say about Environment
These properties describe meanings and reference targets. Storage types, required fields, and cardinality belong to the consuming data model.

|---|---|---|
| Environment type | Which kind of place this environment is, in the organization's own words. Development, test, staging and production are the usual kinds. The attribute does not fix the vocabulary: a further kind, such as a sandbox, is still an environment type. | Scalar meaning |

The environment the build is put into. A deployment to staging and a deployment to production are different deployments even when they carry the same release.
An environment in which this flag is set, when the flag is not the same in every environment. The environment is where the software runs; the flag is not that place.
